Effects of board game activities on the self-concept and adaptive behavior of educationally retarded children

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of board game activities on the self-concept and adaptive behavior of educationally retarded children. The subjects in this study were 15 underachieving fifth graders who were selected from Y elementary school in Busan. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group. Descriptive statistics were used to obtain statistical data on mean and standard deviation to look for any possible gaps between the experimental and control groups, and t-test was employed. As a result, First, board game activities affected on the self-concept positively of children with educationally retarded. Second, board game activities affected on the adaptive behavior positively of children with educationally retarded. all the fifth-grade underachievers of the experimental group showed an improvement in self-concept and adaptive behavior. It showed that the board game activities were very effective at boosting the self-concept and adaptive behavior of the educationally retarded children. To make it happen, they should be helped to be self-esteemed and pursue self-realization. One of the ways for them to value and believe in themselves is to be engaged in verbal and physical activities in permissive environments by utilizing their favorite play stuffs.
